Sonora

Lorang named this bit Sonora for a variation on the style of cheek piece used. A longtime fan of big concha style bits, Lorang wanted to create a piece that would capture a person’s attention from a distance — then, moving closer, the small details begin to appear and form the complete story.  Fine silver inlays along with bold engraving accent the soft, French grey finish, creating a beautiful result. Lorang says this bit is influenced by both Ernie Marsh and Wilson Capron, as well as his own experiences in the Western landscape of Montana.

(2024 Fellow)
Larry Lorang grew up with a ranching and rodeo background in central Montana. Spending days on a horse, early on he developed an appreciation for handmade cowboy gear, especially bridle bits. In 2020 he began making bits and spurs full-time. Since then, Lorang has been presented with several amazing opportunities, including being awarded the 2023 TCAA fellowship. Grateful for the relationships he has made through the TCAA fellowship and honored to be included in this year’s TCAA exhibition, Lorang and his wife, Lacy, currently own and run cattle on the ranch where he grew up.
